How to Analyse an Economic Surprise

A number being higher than forecast does not automatically mean a particular currency will strengthen.

01 / IDENTIFY

Understand the Indicator

Check what is being measured, its geographic coverage, reference period and unit.

02 / COMPARE

Evaluate the Surprise

Compare the release against consensus expectations and inspect revisions to prior data.

03 / CONTEXT

Assess Policy Implications

Consider whether the surprise could change monetary-policy expectations, growth forecasts or market risk sentiment.

04 / VERIFY

Observe Market Response

Review actual price behaviour, liquidity and other releases instead of assuming the direction of the next market move.

Important: This section explains how to interpret economic information. It does not present real-time releases or predict market direction. Release definitions, seasonal adjustments, reporting units and prior data revisions vary. Economic-calendar importance labels are estimates of potential relevance, not guaranteed volatility forecasts.

Four Risks Around Economic Releases

Large market movements are only one source of potential loss. Execution conditions also matter.

01 / VOLATILITY

Rapid Price Changes

02 / SPREADS

Wider Trading Costs

Bid-ask spreads may widen during uncertain or illiquid trading conditions.

03 / LIQUIDITY

Reduced Order Depth

Available liquidity may change rapidly, affecting achievable execution prices.

04 / SLIPPAGE

Unexpected Fills

Market and stop orders may execute at prices different from those anticipated.

✦ Event Research Process

Research Before, During & After News

A structured workflow for assessing the information surrounding scheduled economic announcements.

BEFORE THE RELEASE

Establish Expectations

Confirm the release time, source, forecast, previous reading and possible revisions. Identify the markets likely to be exposed to the news.

AT THE RELEASE

Examine the Full Data

Compare actual figures with consensus, inspect other simultaneously published indicators and account for unstable liquidity.

AFTER THE RELEASE

Review Market Repricing

Study the response across currencies, yields and relevant assets. Distinguish short-lived volatility from persistent changes in market expectations.

Important financial risk notice: Economic releases do not offer predictable or guaranteed trading outcomes. Unexpected results can cause rapid volatility, widened spreads, reduced liquidity and slippage. 9 Questions Answered
What is an economic calendar?

An economic calendar lists scheduled announcements such as inflation, employment, GDP and central-bank decisions. It commonly displays release dates, times, countries, forecasts, previous results and reported actual figures.

What do Actual, Forecast and Previous mean?

Actual is the published value of an economic indicator. Forecast is an estimate made before publication, often representing a consensus. Previous is the prior reported figure, which may later be revised.

What does a high-impact economic event mean?

A high-impact label indicates that a data provider considers the event potentially important for financial markets. It does not guarantee substantial price movements, higher volatility or any particular directional response.

Why can currencies fall after apparently positive news?

Currency prices respond to changes in expectations rather than simply whether a reported figure sounds positive. A result may already be priced in, conflict with other data or influence interest-rate expectations differently from what investors anticipated.

Which economic indicators should beginners learn first?

CPI, major employment reports, GDP, business-activity indexes and central-bank rate decisions are useful starting points. Begin by learning their definitions, reporting units, release schedules and limitations.

Does every country publish economic data at the same time?

No. Release schedules vary by country, institution and indicator. Some announcements are rescheduled, and daylight saving time can change how release times appear in your local timezone.

Can published economic figures be revised?

Yes. GDP, employment and other statistical releases may be revised as additional information becomes available. A full interpretation should consider both the latest result and changes to earlier figures.

Is trading immediately after NFP or CPI safe?

No trading period is automatically safe. Major announcements can coincide with rapid repricing, wider spreads, limited available liquidity and significant slippage. Stop orders do not always execute at their intended trigger prices.

Where can I verify official economic announcements?

Verify US economic data through the Bureau of Labor Statistics or Bureau of Economic Analysis . For euro-area data consult Eurostat . Monetary-policy announcements should be checked directly with the relevant central bank.

✦ Understanding Economic Data

Economic Calendar Data & Accuracy

How to evaluate release information and distinguish reliable observations from uncertain interpretations.

01

Source Verification

Check official statistical releases, central-bank statements and primary documents when accuracy is essential. Third-party economic calendars are useful research aids but may contain delays or errors.

02

Forecast Uncertainty

Consensus estimates can change before an announcement. Forecast differences are not guaranteed predictors of price direction. Revisions and related data may also matter.

03

Timezone & Release Timing

Confirm the timezone and date shown by the data provider. Calendar widgets, session schedules and broker server times may differ. Holidays and rescheduling can also affect event timing.
